Trademark Search

Trademark Search

1. Exact Search

An exact search is conducted to identify prior trademarks that are identical or substantially identical to the proposed trademark.

We search the JPO trademark database for earlier applications and registrations and report any relevant marks found.

An exact search is useful as a preliminary check before filing a trademark application in Japan.

2. Similar Search

A similar search covers not only identical trademarks but also prior trademarks that may be considered similar in appearance, pronunciation, or meaning.

We review relevant prior applications and registrations and assess potential conflicts with the proposed trademark based on Japanese trademark examination practice.

This search provides a more comprehensive assessment of the registrability of the proposed trademark in Japan.

3. Similar Group Code

In Japan, goods and services are assigned Similar Group Codes by the JPO for the purpose of assessing similarity between goods and services.

Goods or services assigned the same Similar Group Code are generally presumed to be similar, even if they belong to different classes under the Nice Classification.

For a comprehensive trademark search in Japan, it is therefore important to consider not only the International Classification but also the applicable Similar Group Codes.
