Renewal

1. Renewal Deadline

A Japanese trademark registration is valid for 10 years from the date of registration and may be renewed repeatedly for additional 10-year periods.

An application for renewal may generally be filed within six months before the expiration date.

2. Renewal Fees

The cost of renewal consists of the JPO official fee and our professional fee.

Renewal is available for either a 10-year period or, by paying the registration fee in two installments, an initial 5-year period.

The total cost depends mainly on the number of classes covered by the registration.

3. Late Renewal

If the renewal deadline is missed, a renewal application may still be filed during the six-month grace period following the expiration date, subject to payment of an additional official fee.

If no renewal application is filed within the applicable period, the trademark right will expire.

4. Renewal Procedure

The general renewal procedure is simple:

Instructions → Confirmation of Registration Details → Filing of Renewal Application and Payment of Official Fee → Renewal

No evidence of use is required for renewal of a Japanese trademark registration.

A Power of Attorney is generally not required for filing a standard renewal application in Japan.
